More than a century ago, the Imperial Government of China sent the very first delegation of students abroad. Between 1872 and 1875, the Qing government dispatched 4 groups, in total 120 students, to America. Their average age was only 12. Hence history remembers them by a common title-the Chinese Boy Students.

These young Chinese students were sent to the other side of Pacific 130 years ago, to a young republic founded less than 100 years earlier, to embark on their expected 15-year long overseas study.

In the shortest time possible, they overcame the language barriers and soon prevailed in academic achievement. Meanwhile, they rapidly adjusted themselves to the foreign culture and soon took off their long, Chinese gowns and were often seen on sports fields.

They were students accepted into Harvard, Yale, Columbia, MIT; they were neighbors to Mark Twain; and they were once cordially received by the American President Grant. As the world saw dramatic changes, they were sent to the very front of the Industrial Revolution. However, as nearly half of the students were beginning their tertiary education, the Qing Empire abruptly terminated this project.

These students later became the precursors of China's modern mining, transportation, and communications industries. They were the first presidents of Tsinghua University and Tianjin University, the first diplomats, and the first premier of the Republic of China. After they returned home, they went through the ups and downs of late Qing Dynasty and witnessed the vicissitudes of modern China.

我妈妈家族先人包括唐僧玄奘(Xuanzang)，俗姓陈，本名袆，古时河南洛陽洛州缑氏县（今河南省洛阳市偃师）

起源(Origin)：

1. 商朝(1600 B.C.-1100 B.C.)末年，舜的第33代孙遏父（又称阏父）投附了周国，担任陶正一职，他制陶的技艺极为精湛，博得了周文王的欢心。周武王灭商建周朝后，追封先贤遗民时，把遏父的儿子妫满封于陈（今河南开封以东，安徽亳州以北），国号陈，荣为侯爵，奉守着帝舜的宗祀，并将大女儿太姬嫁给他为妻。妫满死后，谥号为陈胡公，所以又被称为胡公满。按照胙土命的惯例,他以国为氏，称陈氏，为陈氏的开山始祖。
公元前672年(672 A.D)妫满的第12代孙陈完因避难逃到齐国，改姓田。后来他的10世孙田和建立了田氏齐国。战国末年，齐被秦灭。齐王的长子升次子桓先后改姓王氏，三子田轸逃至颍川（今河南禹州一带），恢复陈姓。从此陈氏一门在中原瓜瓞连绵，生生不息，发展成为名门望族。才有后世陈氏颍川世家、颍川衍派的出现与发展。

2. 北魏孝文帝自山西大同迁都洛阳后，于496年(496 A.D.)将代北鲜卑族三字姓侯莫陈氏改为单姓陈氏。据《魏书•官氏志》载，南北朝时，鲜卑族一支侯莫陈氏居于库斛真水，世代为渠帅，随北魏孝文帝南迁洛阳后，改复姓为汉字单姓，称陈氏，此支为河南洛阳陈氏，至今。

迁徙(Migration)：

　　陈姓的繁衍大体上分为两大时期，秦汉之际，主要集中于中国北方广大地区。魏晋南北朝之时，陈姓便开始大举向南推进。自陈国内乱后，陈氏有几次外迁，分别为陈留、阳武户牍乡和固始。唐朝初期和中期，中原陈氏有两次南迁福建。一是唐高宗总章二年，朝廷派陈政镇压福建的啸乱，陈政卒后，其子陈元光代父领兵，平定局势后，设置了漳州郡。因之被后人称为"开漳圣王"。二是颖川陈实后裔陈忠之子陈邕，受宰相李林甫排挤，迁至福建同安，其后子孙兴旺，在福建发展成为"太傅派"陈氏。
陈氏入粤，始于南宋。陈氏入台，始于明末，福建同安人陈永华于明末随郑成功入台湾，为陈氏入台始祖。陈氏迁入越南的历史比较久远。李朝女皇李昭皇之夫陈，于1228年创建越南陈朝，共传8世13王，历时175年。经过一千多年的繁衍，如今陈姓成为越南十大姓氏之首。陈氏移居日本始于明初，大都是明太祖派去的水手。明清以后，闽粤等沿海地区的陈氏，有许多人出海到今新马泰一带谋生。另有一些人不断迁至菲律宾、印度尼西亚和美、英、法、加拿大、澳大利亚等地。

　　起源主要有三：①出自姒姓，春秋时夏禹裔孙敬叔之后，以邑(国)名为氏。据《姓苑》记载：“系出姒姓。夏禹后。春秋时杞公子有仕齐者，食采于鲍，因以命氏。”又据《通志·氏族略》、《元和姓纂》等所载，春秋时，夏禹裔孙敬叔(即杞公子)仕齐，食采于鲍邑(原为夏朝诸侯国，故城在今山东历城东三十里)，其子叔牙以邑(国)名为氏，称为鲍姓。②出自庖牺氏，即伏羲氏，其后有鲍姓。③出自少数民族。据《魏书·官氏志》所载，南北朝民族大融合时期，北魏代北地区少数民族俟力伐氏(一说为俟力氏)随北魏孝文帝南下，定居洛阳，与汉族融合，遂改姓“鲍”，称为鲍氏；同时代北少数民族“鲍俎氏”也有改姓鲍的；清满洲八旗姓保佳氏、瓜尔佳氏等后均有改姓鲍者；景颇族金别氏，佤族羊布拉氏(亦称尤斯拜氏)，汉姓为鲍；内蒙古东部蒙古孛儿只斤氏后改为鲍姓；满、蒙古、回等民族均有鲍姓。

迁徙(Migration)：

　　鲍姓发源于今山东历城，鲍叔牙的子孙在齐国世袭卿位，见于史册的有玄孙鲍牵(鲍庄子)，还有鲍文子、鲍苏，并有裔孙鲍焦隐居于周的国都(今河南洛阳)。战国初田氏代齐，子孙有逃往河北、河南洛阳、山东、江苏等地者。两汉时鲍姓名人渐多，西汉末的鲍宣乃渤海高城(今河北盐山)人，后被王莽所杀，他极有预见地在生前将长子鲍永、次子鲍升避居于上党屯留(今属山西)，鲍永子鲍昱、孙鲍德、玄孙鲍昂俱有名于当世，尤以鲍昱最为著名，贵至宰相，为后世鲍姓上党郡望形成打下了坚实基础。东汉时还有扶风(今陕西兴平)人鲍鸿、鲍恢，京兆新丰(今陕西临潼)人鲍邮，东汉初的九江(今安徽凤阳)人鲍骏……表明在秦汉之际，鲍姓已分布于黄河中下游地区，并有一支进入安徽。魏晋南北朝时期，繁衍于山东、江苏间地，古属东海郡之地的鲍姓人丁兴旺，名家辈出，著名南朝乐府诗人鲍照即为此郡鲍姓之杰出代表。此郡鲍姓由于离东晋、南朝之国都南京较近，其由于仕宦、逃难进入今浙江、江苏、湖北等地。此际，繁衍于上党、泰山、河南郡的鲍姓亦呈族大人众、名家辈出之态，昌盛为鲍姓上党、泰山、河南郡望。唐末至五代的动乱导致鲍姓在今江西、湖南、四川等地定居下来。两宋时，鲍姓发展，其除昌盛于山东外，繁衍于今安徽、江苏、浙江等南方省份的鲍姓，名人辈出。元初、元末的动乱导致鲍姓向广东、福建、广西等地徙居。明初，山西鲍姓作为洪洞大槐树迁民姓氏之一，被分迁于安徽、江苏、河北、河南洛阳等地。明中叶以后，鲍姓进入台湾省，有清一代，鲍姓分布愈广。

In Chinese culture Bao Shuya is known mainly for his loyalty to his friend, as well as his open-mindedness and tolerance and his judgement of ability; Guan Zhong's political career and the subsequent power of the state of Qi arguably began from Bao's belief in his friend's talent, which he stood by firmly. The Shiji records a quote from Guan regarding his lifelong friend and supporter:

《史记·管晏列传》：“管仲曰：‘吾始困时，当与鲍叔贾，分财利多自与，鲍叔不以我为贪，知我贫也。吾尝为鲍叔谋事而更穷困，鲍叔不以我为愚，知时有利不利也。吾尝三仕三见逐於君，鲍叔不以我为不肖，知我不遭时也。吾尝三战三走，鲍叔不以我为怯，知我有老母也。公子纠败，召忽死之，吾幽囚受辱，鲍叔不以我为无耻，知我不羞小节而耻功名不显于天下也。生我者父母，知我者鲍子也。’”
[When Bao and I did business together I would take more profits for myself; he did not deem me greedy, but understood my poverty; when I came up with business ideas that incurred losses he did not deem me foolish, but put it down to business fluctuations. When I asked for audiences with lords thrice and was thrice rejected he did not deem me useless, but put it down to lack of opportunity; when I fled from battle thrice he did not deem me cowardly, but understood I had an ailing mother at home. When Prince Jiu was killed I was jailed and disgraced, and endured it; he did not deem me shameless, but knew I had greater ambitions. My parents gave birth to me, but it is Bao who knows me best! ]

于是洛灵感焉，徙倚彷徨，神光离合，乍阴乍阳。竦轻躯以鹤立，若将飞而未翔。践椒涂之郁烈，步蘅薄而流芳。超长吟以永慕兮，声哀厉而弥长。尔乃众灵杂遢，命俦啸侣，或戏清流，或翔神渚，或采明珠，或拾翠羽。从南湘之二妃，携汉滨之游女。叹匏瓜之无匹兮，咏牵牛之独处。扬轻袿之猗靡兮，翳修袖以延伫。休迅飞凫，飘忽若神，陵波微步，罗袜生尘。动无常则，若危若安。进止难期，若往若还。转眄流精，光润玉颜。含辞未吐，气若幽兰。华容婀娜，令我忘餐。

于是屏翳收风，川后静波。冯夷鸣鼓，女娲清歌。腾文鱼以警乘，鸣玉鸾以偕逝。六龙俨其齐首，载云车之容裔，鲸鲵踊而夹毂，水禽翔而为卫。于是越北沚。过南冈，纡素领，回清阳，动朱唇以徐言，陈交接之大纲。恨人神之道殊兮，怨盛年之莫当。抗罗袂以掩涕兮，泪流襟之浪浪。悼良会之永绝兮。哀一逝而异乡。无微情以效爱兮，献江南之明珰。虽潜处于太阴，长寄心于君王。忽不悟其所舍，怅神宵而蔽光。

于是背下陵高，足往神留，遗情想象，顾望怀愁。冀灵体之复形，御轻舟而上溯。浮长川而忘返，思绵绵而增慕。夜耿耿而不寐，沾繁霜而至曙。命仆夫而就驾，吾将归乎东路。揽騑辔以抗策，怅盘桓而不能去。

Luoyang was the cradle of Chinese civilization from 8000 years ago and selected as the capital city of China for as long as 1529 years by 96 emperors and 13 dynasties starting from the Xia Dynasty (21st-16th century BC) in the 21st century BC. In the period following the Han Dynasty (206BC-220), and particularly during the Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907) dynasties, the city experienced a period of growth and prosperity and ranked as one of the international metropolitans of the time. Its long history endows Luoyang with a profound sense of culture. The city is the cradle of Chinese civilization where many Chinese legends happened, such as Nvwa Patching the Sky, Dayu Controlling Flood and the Chinese ancestor Huangdi Establishing the Nation. The city is also famed as the 'Poets Capital' as poets and literates of ancient China often gathered there and left grand works, including 'Book of Wisdom' ('Daode Jing'), 'Han History' ('Han Shu') and 'Administrative Theory of Admonishing Official' ('Zi Zhi Tong Jian'). Religious culture once thrived here. Taoism ( Lao-tzu lived and created Taoism here, and Confucius came here to learned from Lao-tzu ) originated here, the first Buddhist temple of China set up by the government was located there(Monk Sanzang who was borned here and brought up the interaction between China and India in the early Tang period). Luoyang is also the hometown of many of the scientific inventions of ancient China, such as the seismograph, armillary sphere, paper making, printing and the compass.

Luoyang has rich historical and cultural sites. The Longmen Grottoes (means Dragon's Gate Grottoes) is one of UNESCO World Heritage and one of China's three most precious treasure houses of stone sculptures and inscriptions. The White Horse Temple is the first Buddhist temple and is honored as the 'Cradle of Buddhism in China'. Mt. Mangshan is where ancient tombs of emperors, nobles and literates in the past dynasties collected. The Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum is the world's first example of the kind and presents thousands of treasures discovered in the tombs. Shaolin Temple as official temple of Luoyang nearby Zhengzhou is the place of origin for Chinese Zen Buddhism and the cradle of Chinese Martial Art. Landscapes in Luoyang hold the same attraction as the cultural sites. White Cloud Mountain, Funiu Mountain, Long Yu Wan National Forest Park, Ji Guan Limestone Cave and the Yellow River Xiaolangdi Scenic Area are all worth a visit. Additionally, Luoyang is particularly well known for its peonies. Every year in April, the flowers blossom and attract tourists from all over the world. 欧阳子方夜读书，闻有声自西南来者，悚然而听之，曰：[异哉!]初淅沥以萧飒，忽奔腾而砰湃；如波涛夜惊，风雨骤至。其融于物也，鏦鏦铮铮，金铁皆鸣；又如赴敌之兵衔枚疾走，不闻号令，但闻人马之行声。

　　予谓童子：[此何声也？汝出视之。]童子曰：[星月皎洁，明河在天，四无人声，声在树间。]

　　予曰： [噫嘻，悲哉！此秋声也，胡为而来哉？盖夫秋之为壮也：其色惨淡，烟霏云敛；其容清明，天高日晶；其气栗冽，砭人肌骨；其意萧条，山川寂廖；故其为声也，凄凄切切，呼号愤发。丰草绿缛而争茂，佳木葱笼而可悦；草拂之而色变，木遭之而叶脱；其所以摧败零落者，乃其一气之余烈。

　　夫秋，刑官也，于时为阴；又兵象也，于行为金，是谓天地之义气，常以肃杀而为心。天之于物，春生秋实。故其在乐也，商声主西方之音，夷则为七月之律。商，伤也；物既老而悲伤。夷，戮也；物过盛而当杀。

　　嗟乎，草木无情，有时飘零。人为动物，惟物之灵。百犹感其心，万事劳其形。有动于中，必摇其精。而况思其力之所不及，忧其智之所不能；宜其渥然丹者为槁木，黟然黑者为星星。奈何以非金石之质，欲于草木而争荣？念谁为之戕贼，亦何恨乎秋声!]

Your Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Professor Burton Richter and I wish to thank the Nobel Foundation and the Royal Academy of Sciences for the great honor which has been conferred on us.

Having grown up in the old China, I would like to take this opportunity to emphasize to young students from developing nations the importance of experimental work.

There is an ancient Chinese saying "He who labours with his mind rules over he who labours with his hand". This kind of backward idea is very harmful to youngsters from developing countries. Partly because of this type of concept, many students from these countries are inclined towards theoretical studies and avoid experimental work.

In reality, a theory in natural science cannot be without experimental foundations; physics, in particular, comes from experimental work.

I hope that awarding the Nobel Prize to me will awaken the interest of students from the developing nations so that they will realize the importance of experimental work.
